Local housebuilder Barratt Mercia has leant a helping hand to green fingered Nuneaton residents with a donation of topsoil to the Camp Hill Growing Greens project - a community allotments scheme near the developer's Bluebell development on Queen Elizabeth Road.

Simon Evans (Bluebell Site Manager), Steve McGarth (A volunteer from the Volunteer Centre), Guy Wellings (Volunteer centre connecting communities manager), Anthony (CampHill resident), Abi Culley (Building Sustainable Neighbourhoods Environmental project officer) and Sarah Hunt (Pride in Camp Hill) at the soil donation

The five star housebuilder delivered 21 tonnes of topsoil to the project on Thursday 10th March in readiness for the project's official launch on Monday 21st and both Barratt Mercia and Growing Greens have high hopes that the project will help local people to enjoy growing their own food.

Abi Culley, Environmental Project Officer for Building Sustainable Neighbourhoods, commented "We're thrilled with the donation from Barratt Mercia. The topsoil that they have provided gives the project a springing start as it's fundamental to get good quality soil.

"We use a lot of soil for our project as we have six raised beds at present and plans for a potential addition of six new beds at another site - so soil can be a considerable cost for us.

"That's why it's great to receive this practical donation. The same amount of soil would have cost around £800 so this donation has made the project possible.

"At Growing Greens we feel that community allotments are a great way for people to learn how to grow their own fruit and vegetables and it's a great way for local residents to meet people who they might not have interacted with otherwise.

"And they can save money, too, because a packet of seeds is a lot cheaper than buying the same amount of food from the shops."

Andrew Dauncey, Project Director for Barratt Mercia commented "We're always delighted to support local projects such as Growing Greens. It's a terrific scheme that encourages people to enjoy growing their own food as well as giving them a great opportunity to meet people from the local community."
